The Bonaventure Accounting Association and Students In Free Enterprise have teamed up to offer free tax services this season for those who qualify at a convenient location.
The St. Bonaventure University Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program opened its new tax preparation site at 807 West State Street (next to NAPA). Please call (716) 373-2534 to make an appointment. The office will remain open until April 15. Operating hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
To qualify for assistance, candidates must be residents of Cattaraugus County with an income of $40,000 or lower. Candidates will go through an entrance interview to see whether they qualify for free assistance. Those who qualify must bring a valid picture I.D., Social Security cards, W-2 forms, and forms 1099 to their tax preparation appointment.
Since 2004, the University’s VITA program has brought federal and state income tax benefits to people with low and moderate incomes by providing free income tax preparation and e-filing. The program focuses on workers who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a refundable tax credit available to low-income workers with earned income. In 2007, VITA surpassed its original expectations with over $1 million in cumulative tax refunds since 2003.
Accounting majors from St. Bonaventure University volunteer to make the program possible under the leadership of Dr. Susan Anders, professor of accounting and adviser for the VITA program.
The Bonaventure Accounting Association operates the VITA program in partnership with the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services. The United Way supplies funding for the operation.
All of the tax preparation volunteers have completed certified IRS training and use its professional tax software to file returns. Members have also taken courses to supplement their background in basic tax laws and concepts. Student accountants prepare tax returns for free and electronically file the returns so clients receive their funds faster.
